Why it works here
The mulch layer holds moisture against our windy spring days and keeps seed from washing off grade during heavy lake-effect rain. On a sloped Millcreek or Fairview lot, broadcast seed usually ends up in the street; hydroseed stays put.
Hydroseed vs. sod vs. broadcast seed
Sod gives an instant lawn at the highest cost. Broadcast seed is cheapest and least reliable. Hydroseeding lands in the middle: germination in 7 to 14 days, full coverage in about 6 to 8 weeks, and a root system that grows in place rather than knitting through a seam.
Best timing
Late August through early October is the strongest window in Erie — warm soil, cooler air, fewer weeds. Spring hydroseeding from May into June also works when watering is consistent.
Watering schedule
Light watering two to three times daily for the first two weeks, then taper to deeper, less frequent watering. Stay off the lawn until the first mow at roughly three to four inches of growth.
